• The Case for Supplements

Don't worry -- you already take nutrition supplements.

Dietary supplements are intended to supply nutrients (vitamins, minerals, fatty acids or amino acids) that are missing or not consumed in sufficient quantity in a person's diet.

Supplements. The antithesis is eating all natural. Eating natural foods exclusively -- not even organic produce -- doesn't yield sufficient amounts of nutrients. There are two reasons why supplements cannot and should not be avoided respectively, directly and indirectly --

    1. Many foods are denaturized with additives that act like supplements.
    2. Many natural foods are depleted of essential nutrients.

Every time you eat something in addition to your standard, staple foods, intended to provide you with more -- or at least enough -- of the essential nutrients, you supplement your nutrition.

Take candy gum, for example. Pure carbohydrates, sucrose, in fact. Can anybody say blood sugar rush? Sugar crash? Sweets are supplements. What about alcohol? Coffee?

What's the difference between taking a daily multivitamin or mineral and following the habit of something sweet after each and every meal? Both influence your metabolism and your totals in terms of quality of nutrition intake and resulting overall health and its attributes.

Even the most natural way of eating depends largely on industry products and factory processing. Since you can't eat 100% natural anyway, at least try to shift the balance a little bit towards your well-being, instead of thinking going all natural and consuming the nutrient-depleted stuff.

Think balancing foods. While eliminating the convenient-yet-unhealthy isn't always possible, try to diminish the influence of negative supplementation by providing positive counterweights. Fishoil against saturated fats for example. Saturated fats won't kill you. It is the ratio of saturated to poly- to monounsaturated fats that you can manipulate in your favor.

Nutrition is a highly researched, debated, and constantly evolving field, so please do your own research and see what works best for you personally. To get started, you may want to take a look at vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Once you determine that you don't eat enough quantity in the first place, how would you be able to offer your body all the quality it needs?
