• Focus Your Focus

You not only want to build the discipline and the skills to focus on any one goal or obstacle that is crossing your path, you also want to use your focus and be able to focus your focus to get things done reliably and repeatedly.

Concentrating on that long-term life goal is not sufficient. You have to focus on each and every of the smaller goals and projects, one at a time. By starting ever new projects and by constantly inventing, essentially dreaming up, schemes to break through, you are never going to succeed. Not with the smallest of goals and even less so with your big mission. Stay with one plan and follow through until it is accomplished or until you at least know better and are able to modify the plan.

To focus is to selectively concentrate on one thing while ignoring other things. For how long you ask? For as long as it takes. Stopping at any earlier moment leaves you with nothing at all. Make all your energy and efforts converge on exactly one specific point.

Focus like a laser. As long as you don't succeed cutting through the material, under no circumstances, do not move your focus. You would have to begin all new. While there are complex situations and tasks that are predestined to be spread over multiple sessions and alternated between, there are certain instances -- the ones you later refer to as quantum leaps -- that have to be dealt with and finished on the spot.

What do you think happens when you shift your focus just before it finally makes a difference? Nothing. How is it possible that your area of creation is all dents, delicately shaped dents to be sure, yet without even a tiny breakthrough? There are scratches and the traces of vigorous work all over the place but not one single time did you manage to go through.

Circumstances? Let's invoke the laser again. You selectively concentrate and converge the rays on that one point, the one point that is your next and your only target for now. The laser is burning and it is already changing the surface at the point your plan determined. As long as you continue focusing on that one target, the laser keeps making a difference. From that moment on, it's a simple function of time. Furthermore, this is an all or nothing situation. Whatever it takes.

Focus without persistence is useless. Persistence = Time × Focus. Don't you dare to even think about moving the laser away from the current point. Hold the focus and persist until you are done. You may think this is not for you but patience helps and is crucial. You're not going to fail because of a lack of patience? Didn't you intend to go through all the way?

We're waiting for you on the other side.
