Meta-Commentary: Low-Carb Cravings and the Ancient Warrior
A lifestyle removed too far from reality craves exactly that: Reality -- as much as possible, as real as imaginable and as pure as only reality can be. With phenomena such as the Warrior Diet, the emergence of hunter-gatherer cultures as role models for the hi-tech-addicted and the electricity-dependant, as well as the reintroduction of ancient exercises and movements into physical culture, it seems obvious that the art of allowance, the law of attraction, the strict filtering of negative thoughts, let alone actions, are in some ways comparable with low-carbs for the mind, compensated by uncontrollable cravings for sweets. The same drive that let's you kill the sweets is slowly driving and guiding you towards the more violent, the martial side of life.
The Warrior Diet recalls the ancient tribe's daily schedules, their means of preparing and dealing with their food as well as an image of the warrior as a strong, romantic, always alert, ideal human. By following the warrior's eating habits you will be closer to the hero hidden within you.
Those very warriors were probably hunter-gatherers. It is said that they are the last humans who would use their genes the way they were supposed to be used. After the period of hunting and gathering, after agriculture had evolved and provided the means to give up hunting and gathering for each and everybody and with the introduction of techniques to sustain more people on less area, the human physique wasn't able to catch up with the inventions of the human mind and started to decline into obesity and civilizational diseases. By learning the foraging techniques successfully employed by our hunter-gatherer idols, we are eventually able to properly enjoy our genetic abilities, specifically those regarding digestion and metabolism.
The same set of genes that evolved only slowly since the advent of agriculture is still accustomed to high levels of physical activity. The reintroduction of ancient exercises and movements into physical culture is a result of studying the successful hunter's body composition in various cultures and societies. It turns out that certain activities, when performed regularly -- some people call it work -- actually harden the body and leave you with a superior physique. By mimicking the hunter in your exercise program you prepare yourself for the hunt.
Allow a bit more warrior into your hi-tech, urban, civilized, yet untamed lifestyle and at the same time, make the warrior follow at least some rules and you'll benefit greatly from both worlds. By -- temporarily -- removing yourself from reality and introducing the sense or the absence of certain obviously essential elements of life, you sensitize and open your self to life itself. To recall the diet analogy, a common recommendation is rotating high-protein and high-carb days to prevent craving sweets after an all too strict stretch of low-carbohydrates. The alternating between both extremes satisfies either demand and helps you achieve and maintain the healthy balance. Thus, moderation is not merely the only balanced way but the only maintainable way of living. Everything else fails over the long term. Always consider that every extreme you pursue has to be balanced out and eventually compensated with its respective counterpart.
